About Lyme Disease (Borreliosis)
Lyme disease, or Borreliosis, is an illness that attacks the nervous system and can lead to serious neurological disorders. The infection can also cause skin conditions and arthritis. It is caused by Borrelia bacteria, primarily transmitted through tick bites. Ticks are insects commonly found in forests and shrubs throughout temperate climates.
If a tick is infected with Borrelia bacteria, the infection can be transmitted to humans through a bite on the arm, leg, or any other exposed part of the body. The risk of transmission is approximately 1%–2%. Signs of infection typically appear 3 to 10 days after a bite—though sometimes weeks or months later—in the form of a characteristic erythema (skin redness). This redness occurs at the site of the bite and often appears as a "bullseye" ring that expands over time, with a pale center.
Fever may also occur alongside the rash. When infected, the immune system responds by producing antibodies against the Borrelia bacteria. A specific type of antibody, Immunoglobulin M (IgM), can be detected in the blood 2 to 4 weeks after infection.
When should I perform the test?
The Easy Home Lyme Disease Test should be used 2 to 4 weeks after a tick bite, or immediately if a characteristic circular rash appears at the site of the bite.
What is the test used for?
This test is intended for the at-home detection of Borrelia antibodies in the blood. The testing process is simple, and results can be read in just 10 minutes to help determine if an infection has occurred.
How does the test work?
When a person is infected with Borrelia bacteria, the immune system begins producing specific IgM (Immunoglobulin M) antibodies. These antibodies circulate in the blood and bind to the bacteria.
The Easy Home Lyme Disease Test identifies the presence of these IgM antibodies. After applying a small blood sample to the test device, colored lines will appear in the results window within 10 minutes:
-
One Line: Negative (IgM antibodies are not detected).
-
Two Lines: Positive (IgM antibodies are present in the blood).
