What is Natural and Organic Cosmetics?

The word organic basically means that a cosmetic product contains 100% natural ingredients that have been grown and processed in an ecological manner—without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or growth regulators. Instead, organic farmers use crop rotation, natural fertilization with compost, and mechanical soil cultivation to ensure better growth and soil quality. They also combat weeds, insects, and other pests using natural methods. Around the world, approximately 30 million hectares of arable land are dedicated to organic farming.

Unfortunately, many cosmetic products labeled as "natural" still contain numerous harmful ingredients and are not 100% natural. This is because, in most countries, there are no government regulations or strict guidelines for cosmetic products, allowing many products to be called "natural" regardless of their actual composition.

For example, some of the most common harmful ingredients in so-called "natural" products are Sodium Laureth Sulfate or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLES/SLS). These are often used in antifreeze and engine degreasers and can irritate the eyes and skin. Other harmful ingredients include parabens—ethyl paraben, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, butyl paraben, and isobutyl paraben (or E216). These compounds are frequently used as preservatives, even though research has linked them to various types of cancer.

Many users do not realize that the word "natural" on a cosmetic product does not necessarily mean the product is free from harmful chemical ingredients.
