Information about the use of online cookies
The new Electronic Communications Act, ZEKom-1, transposed the amended Directive on Privacy in Electronic Communications 2002/58/EC into the Slovenian legal order. The decisions of the new law come into effect on 15 June 2013 and apply to all websites that use cookies and similar technologies for their operation in any way.
In the Directive, the article that talks about cookies and similar technologies that can be used to store information or retrieve information stored on the user's terminal equipment (such as a computer, mobile device) has been amended. The use of such technologies is now only possible on the basis of the user's consent.
The use of cookies on the web is nothing new, but users are generally very unfamiliar with such technologies, as well as with the tools that can be used to manage cookies.
What are web cookies?
A cookie is a small text file that is transferred to the user's computer when he visits a website and usually contains:
the name of the server from which the cookie was sent;
lifetime of the cookie;
value - a simple randomly generated unique number.
The cookie itself does not contain or collect information. However, if it is read by the server together with the web browser, it can help the website provide more user-friendly services - for example, by remembering previous purchases or the user's account information. Only the server that sent the cookie can read and use this cookie. On a trusted website, cookies can thus enrich the experience. However, cookies can also be used in ways that represent an invasion of an individual's privacy. Cookies can be stored for different lengths of time, only for the duration of the browsing session or much longer.
