What are hydrosols?

Hydrosol or floral water is the liquid that remains after the steam distillation of plants during the production of essential oils. They carry the same scent and beneficial properties as essential oils, but are excellent for skincare and numerous other purposes.

They are ideal for those just starting with aromatherapy, as they are much gentler than essential oils.

The most common use is as a skin toner, as it pleasantly refreshes and hydrates the skin. Applying moisture before using a cream or skin oil is essential if we want the product to perform its task perfectly. All processes of new cell formation, regeneration, and nutrient absorption occur in the subcutaneous tissue. If the epidermis is dry, the nourishing product cannot penetrate deeply enough.

A hydrosol or toner hydrates the skin, helps open the pores, and dilutes the subsequent application (cream, oil, plant butter). This allows your cosmetic product to penetrate into deeper layers and nourish the skin where it is needed most.

Versatile Uses

Hydrosols can also be:

  • Added to baths.

  • Used to prepare natural cosmetic products (especially fresh clay masks) instead of ordinary water.

  • Used as a deodorant or a refreshing spray for the face and body.

  • Used for cooling the skin or as an aroma in the sauna.

  • Added to the final hair rinse.

  • Worn as a perfume or used during an oil massage.

  • Used as a linen spray before ironing or as a room freshener.
